Hi, this is a blog post about the movie A beautiful mind. In mathematics, John Forbes Nash Jr. was a genius whose work in game theory revolutionized the field of economics and changed how we understand strategic situations in everyday life. In 1994, he shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his work on cooperative games and became a legend among mathematicians for his contributions to economics and number theory which have also led to revolutionary insights in quantum physics. Yet it wasn’t just academic brilliance that set him apart from others—this man’s stunning intellect was matched by something even more remarkable: his struggle with madness. After being released from a mental hospital in 1959, Nash returned to Columbia University but was subsequently fired for his erratic behavior. He became homeless and suffered from paranoid schizophrenia for the next twenty years, leading to periods of homelessness and poverty—and eventually, suicide. With his mind damaged by illness, Nash became notorious among his peers for his erratic behavior at academic conferences—often shouting over other attendees while others had trouble understanding him. But while others found Nash’s actions annoying or frustrating, the world was soon to learn that he possessed one of the most impressive intellects mankind has ever known. Nash shared many qualities with other geniuses that are well-documented in history. From great achievements to eccentricities, Nash exhibited many of the traits that are common among geniuses. For example, many geniuses are regarded as prodigies in their youth—artists who have their first show at a young age or inventors who create their first device around the same time. Likewise, Nash published his first scientific paper at age nineteen. But differences between geniuses usually outweigh similarities. For example, many prodigies tend to be isolated from their peers—their brilliance making them uncomfortable around others—whereas genius is not usually accompanied by social isolation in adults. But an even greater difference between prodigy and genius comes with advanced age. As a person begins to age, they tend to lose the ability to focus and concentrate. People in their twenties may have so much energy that they can’t sleep at night, but as they get older, the ability to focus and concentrate diminishes due to physical and mental exhaustion—and this is where geniuses begin to show a clearer difference from prodigies. The greatest achievements a genius can achieve usually occur when he is in his majority—that is, at the age of thirty-five or after. While geniuses have been known throughout history—for example, Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection was an important contribution because it helped us understand how we came to be—prodigies are somewhat different. Prodigies are usually focused on achieving short-term goals—if they can get an A in their math class, then great; if they can learn to play the piano fast enough to get into Juilliard, then great. A genius, on the other hand, is concerned with theoretical concepts around which he can build his life decision-making process; where did I come from? How did I evolve? Why do things happen in the world? Prodigies are focused on winning at trivia or becoming famous—in other words, winning at an immediate game. cfa1e77820
